About Us

Spoorthy empowers marginalized communities through advocacy, education and sustainable development to build an inclusive and just society across Karnataka.

Who We Are

We are SPOORTHY

Spoorthy is a grassroots non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in the year 2000, headquartered in Davanagere, Karnataka. For over two decades, we have been working tirelessly to uplift marginalized communities through rights-based advocacy, inclusive education, sustainable development, environmental justice and institutional empowerment.

Rooted in the values of equity, participation and dignity, Spoorthy has emerged as a recognized catalyst for social change across multiple districts in Karnataka—transforming the lives of children, women, farmers, persons with disabilities, and tribal communities.

These accolades are not just awards—they are reflections of trust, credibility and the impact Spoorthy continues to make across communities.

Sustainable Impact

In a landmark achievement, Spoorthy’s Project Director, Sri K.B. Roopa Naik, was appointed as a Member of the Karnataka State Child Rights Protection Commission (KSCRPC). This role allowed the organization to influence policy and decision-making at the state level, further amplifying its voice for children’s protection and rights in multiple districts including Davanagere, Gadag, Haveri, Chitradurga and Uttara Kannada.

Grassroots-Centered

Spoorthy’s unwavering commitment to justice, empowerment, and grassroots development has earned recognition from both State and National institutions. The organization was honored with the prestigious Kittur Rani Chennamma Prashasti by the Government of Karnataka—a testament to its transformative work in advancing women's development and leadership across rural Karnataka.

Rights-Focused

Spoorthy’s tireless efforts in the fight against child labor, child marriage and school dropouts were also acknowledged by the Department of Labour and the Department of Education, Government of Karnataka. The organization was felicitated for its outstanding role in promoting children’s rights and reintegrating thousands of vulnerable children into education systems.

What Makes Us Unique

Spoorthy stands apart as a truly grassroots-driven organization, grounded in the lived realities of the communities it serves. Every initiative is guided by the voices of local people, ensuring that solutions are relevant, inclusive and sustainable. This deep connection with the community has enabled Spoorthy to become a trusted partner in transformation—shaping interventions that reflect real needs and aspirations.

Over the years, Spoorthy has built a strong reputation for its rights-based advocacy and policy impact. From challenging land grabs through public interest litigations to strengthening child protection frameworks, the organization has consistently acted as a voice for the voiceless and a catalyst for systemic change.

What We Do

Child Rights & Education

Spoorthy has been at the forefront of protecting and promoting the rights of children, especially those who are most vulnerable. Through grassroots campaigns, bridge education programs, and strong institutional collaboration, we have successfully mainstreamed over 6,800 school dropouts, helping them rejoin formal education and pursue brighter futures. With the support of ChildLine, more than 1,500 children have been rescued from neglect, abuse, and child labour. Our ‘Jeeva’ Early Intervention Center offers specialized therapy and learning support for children with developmental delays, ensuring every child gets the opportunity to thrive.

Women Empowerment

We believe empowered women are the backbone of strong communities. Spoorthy has helped organize over 10,000 women into Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across Karnataka, promoting financial independence, leadership and social participation. Many of these women are now not just earning regular incomes through micro-enterprises but are also actively involved in local governance. In the recent Panchayat elections, over 160 women from these groups were successfully elected—standing as beacons of change, voice, and decision-making at the grassroots level.

Livelihood & Employment

Economic self-reliance is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Through vocational training programs, Spoorthy has trained over 215 school dropout youths in practical trades such as tailoring, beautician skills, plumbing, electrical work and more. Additionally, by facilitating the effective implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), we’ve ensured wage employment for over 35,000 families, significantly reducing migration and improving the quality of life in rural communities.

Environment & Sustainability

Our environment initiatives are rooted in community-driven conservation. Spoorthy has conducted extensive surveys across 7 taluks, identifying over 30,000 acres of common land to be revived for productive and ecological use. Projects involving organic farming, biofuel development, watershed and soil conservation and sustainable land management have not only restored degraded lands but also improved agricultural productivity and local livelihoods. We integrate eco-friendly practices with traditional knowledge, building resilience against climate change in rural regions.

Inclusion for Specially-Abled

True development is inclusive. Spoorthy has pioneered initiatives to ensure dignity and opportunity for persons with disabilities, especially in underserved areas. Over 1,000 individuals with visual or physical challenges have been trained in digital literacy, computer skills and mobile technology use, equipping them for higher education or employment. Our Early Intervention programs provide customized care and therapy for young children with special needs—offering a head start in life where none existed before.
